By now everyone should be aware of the new scandal engulfing the beleaguered Gillard government. Peter Slipper, the former NLP member who defected to become the Speaker of the House of Representatives, has been accused of abuse of his position as an employer by sexually harassing an employee and abusing Parliamentary entitlements.

Julia Gillard and her ministers are refusing to completely distance themselves from Peter Slipper’s questionable moral behaviour which has included allegations of pursuing younger male employees, urinating out of windows, appearing in risque videos demonstrating unusual behaviour. It’s all sordid stuff, yet Julia Gillard clings to Peter Slipper like a drowning man clinging to a life raft.

Is Julia Gillard devoid of moral fortitude ? Is there no depth that she will not sink to in order to retain power ?

The Gillard government is no stranger to supporting the misdemeanours of parliamentarians. Craig Thomson, formerly a National Secretary of the Health Services Union, has been accused of misusing union issued credit cards to pay for prostitutes. The Gillard government, desperate to retain the numbers to form a government, has dragged it’s feet on investigations of this matter. Julia Gillard is forgiving of the scandal in order to retain the numbers in the house of representatives.

The Thomson and Slipper affairs would never be tolerated by a government with a majority in Parliament.

In the political landscape that includes a hung Parliament, we have a Prime Minister who will turn a blind eye to anything in order to remain Prime Minister.

So where are the independents in this mess ? Rob Oakeshott, Tony Windsor and Adam Bandt are the three men who keep the Gillard government alive. Surely by now one or more of them has come to the view that enough is enough. Unfortunately it seems that the trust placed in each of them by the electorate may have been misguided.

We need a refresh of the Parliament, we need an election. If the Prime Minister will not rid us of the rot and the independents wont act independently then it’s time that the Australian public have the chance to do what others wont.

The scandal of Slipper has been brewing for years, nobody is surprised by the allegations that have surfaced. Privately there are whispers that it’s always been known that Slipper is a bit sleazy.

While we don’t yet know the final fate of Peter Slipper, we do know that Labor under Gillard is flailing about like a wounded animal that is refusing to die.
